Interview with Angel Part 1

From Star Trek Game Information

This is the first part of an interview with Angel that took place on the 21st June 2002. The screenshots shown below are from the Star Trek v Star Wars modification for Star Trek: Armada.

Armada Universe: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Angel: I'm 19, wear black all the time (not a goth) and sit on my arse all day.

Armada Universe: Are you a Star Trek fan and which shows are your preferred viewing?

Angel: Yes, DS9 is my favourite series. But I find Farscape a far superior show to Star Trek with Stargate SG-1 coming second.

Armada Universe: When did you first start modding?

Angel: Been seriously modding for the public for just over 2 years. I've dabbled with Command & Conquer and a few other games for private use for several years though.

Armada Universe: And can you tell us how you got involved with modding Star Trek: Armada II?

Angel: I wanted to make Star Trek vs Star Wars for it.

Armada Universe: Can you tell us about some of the other modding projects you have been involved with in Armada and Armada II?

Angel: There was my own Shipmod that I created, which earned me a place as one of the top dogs in the Armada modding community. I helped a bit with the Millennium Project for Armada 1, but other than that my only serious work is with my own little Shipmod and then Star Trek vs Star Wars.

Armada Universe: What new modding opportunities does Armada II provide?

Angel: Too many to list. There are still to many restrictions though.

Armada Universe: What are your main goals in creating a new ship or mod?

Angel: Balance and Gameplay for ultimate fun. Realism is not a priority if it interferes with the balance of the mod.

Armada Universe: And can you tell us the process you go through in creating a new ship?

Angel: Design a new model, give it a name and a purpose, arm it, put appropriate tech restrictions and we have a new ship.

Armada Universe: What about the process you go through in creating a new mod?

Angel: Plan out what we want for each race in terms of ships and stations, as we put them in we give them a specific purpose, perhaps throw in new ideas for more gameplay and tactical value. Eye candy comes later.

Armada Universe: After that, how do you go about balancing your new mod or ship?

Angel: Lots of online testing. We find we can best isolate what advantages and disadvantages each race has by playing another human and we can balance things out through that.

Armada Universe: What process do you go through when you wish to add to or modify someone else's work to put into your mod?

Angel: The only thing I will ever use from someone elses mod is a Ship/Station Model. Anything else my team and I will design and create myself. For models, we of course ask permission and give them the credit they deserve in the readme file.

Armada Universe: What is your favourite ship from Armada II and your favourite race?

Angel: Never played the Original A2, just got straight to modding, so I'll have to take this from ST vs SW II. Don't really have a favourite ship but my favourite race to play is the Klingons.

Armada Universe: Which ship that you have created is your favourite?

Angel: The K'Tal Super Dreadnought for the Klingons. Never will you find such a beast in another mod :)

Armada Universe: And what ship by another modder is your favourite?

Angel: Don't have one.

Armada Universe: What has been the most enjoyable experience of modding the game so far?

Angel: The publics reaction.

Armada Universe: Is there any feature you are pleased with, that was put into Armada II?

Angel: Several yes.

Armada Universe: With that in mind, is there anything that you would like to have seen in Armada II?

Angel: Planets and Orbiting Stations are hardcoded. This was most dissapointing. Never cared for Seperation.

Armada Universe: And how do you see the future for the Armada II community?

Angel: There are countless projects on the go so I think its got quite a bit of life left to it.

Armada Universe: Do you have any ambition to become a part of the gaming industry, if you do what?

Angel: My life in the gaming industry has already begun :) In the end I hope to be a sucessful Games Designer/Producer.

Armada Universe: And finally, what plans do you have after your current project?

Angel: We plan to make Star Trek vs Star Wars mods for Bridge Commander, StarFleet Command 3 and Jedi Knight II.
