Review of Convergence

From Star Trek Game Information

We review 'Convergence' which is a single player Modification for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Fallen (PC/Mac). This review was posted on 23rd October 2006.

Convergence carries on from the events of the original game and has 20 new levels and cinematics. A full outline of the plot can be found here. Also, you might want to check out an interview with one of Convergence's creators right here.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Fallen is a third person action/adventure game in which you play as Sisko, Kira and Worf and attempt to prevent the three red orbs of the Pah Wraiths from falling into the hands of the Cardassians, Dominion, or even the Pah Wraith followers. In Convergence the missions are structured in a linnear way. You play as Sisko, Kira and Worf in that order with each of the characters re-appearing towards the end of the game.

The sub-plot for most of the missions is to rescue Starfleet personnel, who most fans would describe as being careless redshirts. This modification, as with the original game, is not a FPS where you are out to just get the bad guys. The bad guys in this case being Jem'Hadar, Cardassians, Grigari and other indigenious aliens. They act to make it more difficult in accomplish your mission. Using your Tricorder is the key for success and will also give you detail on the locations you are travelling through. Just becareful not to be using the Tricorder when the Jem'Hadar are just around the corner.

Convergence has the same sort of atmosphere as the series and if there is one thing missing it would be the more familiar parts of the station. Also, other familiar settings from the series wouldn't have done any harm. This wasn't done in the modification due to the abilities of the team and the locations not being in the original game.

One can only hope that Bethesda Softworks will make a new Star Trek adventure game that lets the player experience the sort of stories that are shown on screen and which makes the series so compelling to watch. The Fallen and Convergence do that but not to the full extent of the Star Trek license. It would also have been intersting to see more interaction with characters along the lines of Hidden Evil or some missions working with a squad like Brothers in Arms. As they say patience is a virtue and something you need if you aren't a fan of adventure games.

If there was one genre suited for Star Trek then it would be this one which has brought games like 25th Anniversary, Hidden Evil, The Fallen and Convergence. 25th Anniversary being the best selling Star Trek Game to date. Hopefully we will see more.
