[edit] History

Star Trek: Supremacy began life as "Galactic Supremacy"; a student project of the developer, Mike Strobel, as part of his University studies. At the time, he set himself the task of creating a turn-based scifi-oriented 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) game in a similar vein to the Master of Orion games. The original game was never intended to be a fully fledged game; as it was a University project, time was an issue due to having only a single creator, which made it more critical to produce a workable game than something that was commercially viable - with any luck, there would be time to do this later.

Whilst researching what people would potentially want from his game, Mike came across the Birth of the Federation 2 (BOTF2) Project, a fan-based project aimed at remaking of an old Star Trek game, Birth of the Federation, by Microprose. The BOTF2 project is hosted by Armadafleetcommand (Check the above link). Mike allowed users of the BOTF2 forums to download and test an early pre-alpha version of his game, and after gaining much support and feedback from these testers in early 2007, Mike decided that he would fully support the BOTF2 project and redesign his game into a full-fledged Star Trek game, where it became the second of four games that are currently actively being worked on by the BOTF2 project developers.

[edit] Overview

Supremacy is a 4X game largely based on the 1999 Microprose game, Birth of the Federation. You can play as any one of five major Empires, (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, or the Dominion) although future modifications may allow you to also play as one of the hundreds of minor races who also inhabit the galaxy. Each empire has unique strengths and weaknesses, and it will be up to the player to discover what these are and use them to their advantage to conquer the galaxy.

There will be many ways to win the game. Amongst others, you could conquer everything with your military might, sabotage your enemies into oblivion, research the secrets of the universe - then use them to destroy your ignorant enemies, or you could use diplomacy to bring peace to the galaxy - in your name, of course.

As you explore the galaxy, you will encounter numerous minor races; some friendly, others hostile. Each of these minor races have special bonuses that they can impart upon the empire that they decide to join. These bonuses include buildings that substantially increase research in particular fields, provide a number of special ships to your empire, give the ability to build giant shipyards that are capable of supporting more ships than normal, create spies to sabotage your enemies with, or produce extra food to feed your burgeoning population. Of course, if things go wrong and a minor race rises against you, you could always dispatch a few transports and subjugate their planets!

[edit] Progress

Much progress has been made since Galactic Supremacy was originally reworked into Star Trek: Supremacy, although the game is still far from complete. Recent updates have added in new animations to the galactic map, increased map functionality, improvements to the customiseability of the game settings, and added in a rudimentary Empire relationships screen. Future updates will eventually include a 3D ship-ship combat system, a full diplomacy system, AI for the other Empires and minor races, and changes to the user interface to improve its moddability, amongst others.
