[edit] Overview

Another of the videos to come out of E3 2006, this one features an interview with Parker Davis, interspersed with gameplay footage.

After a nice intro sequence featuring some of the music from "The Wrath of Kahn", we get to see someone take on the Kirk vs Kahn scenario at the E3 booth. We witness the beginning of the fight, when Kahn ambushes the Enterprise, and then we get to see the user attempt to fight back for a couple of minutes.

Things to look for:

0:00 - The intro is very nice, including shots of the NX-01, and the 1701 in drydock.

2:05 - We get to catch glimpses of the XBox 360 controller being used, as well as Parker Davis explaining some of the controls.

3:14 - There is a very brief zoom-in on the monitor, which shows the HUD display. Its worth pausing the video for a bit and examining.

Overall, this is a good 3+ minutes of footage, definately worth a look or two.

Parker Davis: This is Star Trek Legacy, which features all three of the eras in the game. The game covers every era from Star Trek Enterprise to the original series, to The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, so it's got everything in one game.

For me, my joy is just having all the pieces come together, because when you have a vision for something, and the team has had this great vision, but when you're in the early stages of development, there are so many balls in the air, when they start coming together, that's the greatest joy, for a producer anyway. Plus, it's a big relief. Wait until you see the pieces come together! I think we all saw the vision of this and this was the kind of game that we really wanted to make.

It's all about combat, focussing on the awesome grace and power of these elegant starships, and ripping them to shreds, and putting it in an interesting storyline and universe that makes you actually care. So, that's good!

The controls couldn't be easier. You move your camera around. If you don't want to take direct control of the ship, you see the little crosshairs? Click, boom, your ship goes there, it couldn't be easier.

Producer Andy: Oh, fantastic!

Parker Davis: Then, with your left stick, you can actually directly control the ship.

We're still refining the physics and the control for all the ships, so we're still in a pre-offer stage, but it's going to get tighter and tighter. I'm trying to get them banking just right. That's actually a new feature, a banking system.

Producer Andy: You're trying to get in some fluid dynamics.

Parker Davis: Physics are a very important for us, on the ships, as well as AI, because you're not always controlling the ships. you've got to be able to get targets and commands to your fleet and expect them to respond in an intelligent way.

Just click this button to reacquire your target. If you want to get him always centered on your screen, just click this button. He'll stay in the center of your screen until you move the free camera again.

Producer Andy: Okay.

Parker Davis: If you always want him centered, you can keep him right there.

Producer Andy: You can keep him under control.

Parker Davis: That's what we call the battle camera.

Whatever your cursor is on, your ship will go there, if it's an enemy target, if it's a planet. Click on a planet and your ship will go and orbit the planet.

Producer Andy: Very neat.

Parker Davis: So, there's a lot of depth to the interface.

Producer Andy: Well, thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it.

Parker Davis: Sure, glad to have you guys.
