New STO Dev Blog
Aug 25 2007 06:59 - ChessMess
A new dev blog is up at the official site:
Stardate 61107.8 (August 23rd, 2007)
Welcome back to the STO DevLog, our ongoing look into the development of Star Trek Online, the most audacious massively multiplayer online game in the four quadrants!
This month we thought we'd hand the microphone over to one of Perpetual's more recent arrivals. Although he's only been on board for a couple of months, he's been actively engaged in Star Trek Online longer than nearly all of the STO team members. Confused? We'll let him explain...

Startrek-Online.net given Preferred status by Perpetual
Aug 25 2007 06:56 - ChessMess
Quoting Jon from STO.net:
<hr style="color: rgb(14, 14, 14);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --><!-- message --> To our community,
August 4th, 2007 marked 35 months since StarTrek-Online.net was launched. In that time, over 5,600 people have become members of a community that would, it was hoped, create a friendly and comfortable home for people from all around the world to discuss Star Trek Online. We've given time, effort and energy to put up the walls, but we're deadly serious when we say that you have turned this house into a home. We've owed our successes to your posts, your discussions, and your commitment to our site. Today, we'd like to announce that your efforts and commitment have been rewarded with a very big success.
We would like to announce that StarTrek-Online.net will become the first preferred community fansite of Perpetual Entertainment and Star Trek Online, effective immediately.
What does this mean for the site?
In practice, little about the site will change. As always, STOnet is an unofficial and independent fan site; we are not a component, either wholly or partially, of Perpetual Entertainment, CBS or Paramount. The site will continue to be maintained, owned and operated by the staff you've come to know, for the purpose of continuing to build the community we've talked about. We are not Perpetual employees now, and we receive no pay. And, as always, all views expressed are our own.
With that out of the way, the good stuff: the Perpetual developers who have been a familiar presence on our site will continue to be. STO's developers will be visiting and viewing the forum regularly, and occasionally participating in the discussions.
Additionally, each devblog, concept art image, and other Perpetual releases will appear first on STOnet; even before they appear on the official Star Trek Online site, they will appear here. You will be the first to offer your input when Perpetual releases information, and you've already seen this with the release of DevLog #1.
Finally, STOnet staff will have active contact with the STO development team, creating a constant channel of open communication with Perpetual.
Will Perpetual ever launch an official forum?
Yes. Perpetual will be launching an official forum closer to the game's launch, and we look forward to this just as much as you do.
In addition, this preferential relationship will last through the launch of that website, through the game's launch, and beyond. We encourage an active and open discussion, and look forward to hearing your thoughts, questions and concerns if you have any. This is new territory for us, and as such is both exciting and daunting, but we look forward to facing the challenge with all of you. Thank you for your loyal membership, and here's to the next three years of STOnet and STO!
Finally, please see Perpetual's press release here!
Very best,
The Staff of StarTrek-Online.net
Press Release follows;
August 21, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Perpetual Entertainment announced today that StarTrek-Online.net (STOnet) has become the first community site accepted into the Star Trek Online (STO) "Federation of Fansites" community program. STOnet's extensive community, as well as their tools, technology, moderation, and passion for online gaming and all things Star Trek, make them the ideal site for hosting and building the STO community prior to the official community site launch in 2008.
As a preferred community site for Star Trek Online, STOnet will be the launching point for new content and informational releases, making it the place for Star Trek fans to find all of the latest news and discussions about STO. Members of the STO development team will also be frequenting the STOnet forums for feedback, ideas, and general discussion.
"We're thrilled that Perpetual has recognized the contributions made by the members of this community to Star Trek Online," said STOnet owner Jon Reid. "The last three years have seen passionate debate, great creativity, and tremendous growth within our forum, and we look forward to welcoming new members to this discussion as STO moves nearer to completion and the 'Federation of Fansites' continues to grow."
"We believe STOnet will provide a great place for the rapidly expanding Star Trek Online community to gather and grow as we move toward opening the official community site," said Chris Launius, Manager of Community Relations for Perpetual Entertainment. "STOnet has a terrific crew helming the forums. They are extremely knowledgeable not only about everything Star Trek but also about online gaming and community building."

Perpetual Entertainment and Project Darkstar
May 07 2007 07:23 - ChessMess
As some of you are already aware of I've been working in the Java language recently. This week launches JavaOne, an annual gathering of Java developers and vendors. One of the open source projects currently in development is called Project Darkstar
The people who play the games are having a good time. The people who market and sell the games are enjoying life. The shareholders of video game makers are living large. But for developers, writing online games that must scale to dozens, hundreds, or thousands of players—and that must accommodate a diverse assortment of net-connected client devices—is anything but fun and games. It is an expensive, time-consuming, risky, and frequently frustrating venture.
Sun Labs aims to change that. Project Darkstar, released publicly at the 2006 Game Developer Conference in San Jose, California, is harnessing Sun's expertise in development tools, Java technology, and massively scalable back-end infrastructure to simplify the process of developing games that can be deployed on a massive scale to players using virtually any client device. A freely downloadable, early access SDK for writing client-side and server-side code is now available from Sun Labs at <http: www.projectdarkstar.com="">.
This article takes a closer look at the problems Project Darkstar is helping developers overcome—and the new business opportunities the Sun Labs technology can open up for game development companies of all types and sizes.
Well its no coincidence that the recent advertisement featuring Starfleet Command had listed Java Engineers. This is because Perpetual has been in discussions with the Project Darkstar team about using the technology to power Star Trek Online. I'll let the games producer, Daron Stinnett, chime in with more details. Check out the project page and learn more about Project Darkstar and how Open source software is changing our world.</http:>

The French website, jeuxonline has a new interview with Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Daron Stinnett;
[JOL] When we enter the STO website, we can "enlist" by giving our Email and date of birth. First of all, how big is the actual list? and secondly, does the year of birth (the age of potential future players) is important to the team for the development of STO?You can read both English and French version of the interview here.
[Daron Stinnett] Our responses have surpassed the 50,000 mark. The birth date question is only asked for legal purposes.

Gamona.de Daron Stinnett Interview
Mar 31 2007 10:20 - Jaz
Gamona.de has a new and very question specific interview with the Executive Producer of Star Trek Online, Daron Stinnett;
We're very focused on delivering a great shipboard experience where players will have the ability to explore detailed ship and space station interiors, interact with NPCs such as vendors, trainers, and most importantly with hundreds of other players to socialize, find groups, crafting, trade, etc. Once we've successfully created the community experience people expect from these massive ships as "cities", we will explore the idea of providing players with access to the interiors of their personal ships.You can read more about the interview here.

Warcry Interview: Voice Chat?
Jan 19 2007 17:56 - Jaz
Warcry has a new interview with executive producer Daron Stinnett;
WarCry Network: Communication in Star Trek was always unique. They hit com badges and bring each other up on bridge screens. How will the game handle communication?
Daron Sinnett: While text chat will remain the dominant means of communication for the remainder of this decade, if not beyond, there is a lot of opportunity to turn voice chat into a more casual and ubiquitous form of communication. And as you point out, the Star Trek fiction pushes us to excel in this area. Our primary goal is to make voice chat more accessible beyond the realm of hard core grouping. Beyond that, we have a number of ideas borne out of the communications we see on the show, but I'll save a more thorough discussion of our communication systems for when we are closer to launch.

Perpetual and STO in Trouble: Layoffs
Dec 14 2006 16:43 - Jaz
Gamasutra is reporting that Perpetual Entertainment, the producer and developer of the Star Trek MMOG, Star Trek Online has run into financial trouble and have layed of thirty-five people, eight of which are on the STO team;
San Francisco-based Perpetual Entertainment has allegedly laid off thirty-five of its employees, citing budget issues related to a delay of its MMORPG Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, according to an anonymous former employee.Binky, the companies community manager for Perpetual Entertainment gave this statement to the community forums for their upcoming game Gods and Heroes;
The delay of Gods and Heroes' release was believed to be an estimated six-to-ten months, and the layoffs are purported to be a cost-saving measure to accomodate this increase in development time. The thirty-five terminations also include at least eight members of Perpetual's other upcoming game, Star Trek Online.
I am posting this message on behalf of Chris McKibbin, President & Co-founder of Perpetual:
As some of you may have heard we have made some staffing changes at Perpetual. We are proud to announce that we are within a month of being content complete on Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising , our upcoming AAA MMO title. As we achieve this major development milestone, a number of content production roles come to an end. The Gods & Heroes team remains over 80 talented people strong as we enter the final phase prior to launch -- play-testing and tuning to deliver the highest quality game possible. In addition, because we value the feedback our beta testers have been giving us, and because we want to ship the highest quality game possible, we have moved our target ship date from the spring to the summer of 2007. This extension of the testing and tuning phase of the project will allow us to focus entirely on making a great game - which is our #1 goal.
Perpetual remains 100% committed to shipping a fantastic Gods & Heroes game and to continuing development of the much-anticipated Star Trek Online .
